Collection in person
Once payment has been received, you can collect your hat from the Orkney Library in Kirkwall or in Stromness.

If you have added postage to your payment, you will receive your hat(s) by post.
The Charities
Money raised from the auction will go to two Orkney charities, Orkney Blide Trust and Orkney Youth Cafe.
Because George Mackay Brown suffered from depression on and off all his days and because he still, in spite of that, wrote many wonderful poems and stories and novels, the GMB Fellowship and Orkney Library & Archive decided to donate the proceeds of the auction of the hats to two local charities dealing either directly or indirectly with mental health issues. We have asked that the money be spent on creative activities that will enhance the mental health and wellbeing of the users of the projects: writing or art or photography – or knitting! Both charities are delighted to have been chosen and are very grateful to all of you who have knitted such beautiful hats.

All the hats knitted for A Hat for George – an amazing total of 111 – are temporarily on display in the foyer of Orkney Library and Archive in Kirkwall. If you can’t visit this imaginatively displayed exhibition in person, have a look at the colourful walk-through exhibition here:

The Auction
The hats donated were auctioned on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 October.
On these days people bid by phoning Orkney Library and Archive (01856 873166) OR by emailing library@orkney.gov.uk, putting GMB Hats in the subject box OR by filling in a form available in both Stromness and Kirkwall libraries.
WINNING BIDS SHOULD BE NOTIFIED ON THURSDAY 21 OCTOBER.
Those who placed a winning bid will be contacted and advised of payment details and postage (if applicable). Postage will be around £3.50 (UK); overseas rates will be more.
